Destination: food fests

If you happen to be heading to Elkins, W.Va., on the last weekend in April, you may want to prepare for the International Ramp Cook-Off and Festival, where folks take the potent wild leek and serve it up with ham and fried potatoes.

Or maybe you’re driving across country this summer and don’t want to miss Bratwurst Days in Sheboygan, Wis., where on the first Friday and Saturday of August the “Wurst City of the World” celebrates its spicy pork sausage.

God bless America for its food festivals, many of which are detailed in “Food Festival, U.S.A.: 250 Red, White and Blue Ribbon Recipes from All 50 States” by Becky Mercuri (Laurel Glen, $24.95).

Jackie Kennedy’s town

Washington O, Jackie! While the former first lady has always been a popular subject for tour guide Mary Kay Ricks’ curbside walks in Georgetown, this month’s opening of the Corcoran Gallery’s much-anticipated exhibition “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years” has stretched interest from the presidential to the prosaic.

No fewer than five of Jackie’s local addresses are on Ricks’ tours this season. For reservations, call Tour D.C. at (301) 588-8999.

Biking through France

Independent-minded bicyclists who don’t want to ride with a pack might consider the well-priced weeklong packages in France’s Provence region offered by Active Journeys Inc. of Toronto. For $850 per person, double occupancy, you get a rented bike, seven nights’ lodging, breakfast daily, one dinner and luggage transfers between stops. Air fare is extra. For the same price, the company offers weeklong hiking tours. (800) 597-5594, www.activejourneys.com.
