Ordination planned at Lawrence Heights

An ordination service for the Rev. Elmer Fetters will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Lawrence Heights Christian Church, 2321 Peterson Road. Fetters will serve as the church’s associate pastor.

Refreshments will be served after the ordination.

Peace Mennonite to mark Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day 2002, Peace Mennonite Church will present an abbreviated version of “The Council of All Beings,” titled “Honoring the Face of God,” at 10:20 a.m. Sunday. The church meets in the Ecumenical Christian Ministries building at 1204 Oread Ave.

The ritual presumes the sacredness of all creation and gives voice to threatened and endangered species or other entities. The “beings” will be represented by totems. Parking will be limited. Plan to arrive early by carpooling or walking, if possible.

Fund-raiser honors Lawrence mothers

Mother to Mother of Douglas County, a ministry supported by a group of churches, has launched its annual fund-raiser, “A Tribute to Mothers.”

Mothers will be honored by having their names published on Mother’s Day in the Journal-World. Tributes can be purchased after worship services Sunday at participating churches or by calling the Mother to Mother office at 841-0838.

Confirmation set at Plymouth

Ninth-graders at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt., will be confirmed during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. in the Mayflower Room for the confirmands and their families.

A Taize service sponsored by Plymouth and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Plymouth. The monthly service includes Scripture, song and silence.

St. Margaret’s sets retreat

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., plans a vestry and pastoral staff retreat from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at Canterbury House.

Trinity Episcopal forum on children

Monteen Lucas and the Rev. George Wiley will lead the adult forum, “Letting Children Go An Act of Faith,” at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the nave at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Life Tabernacle plans revival

Life Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, 1146 Conn., plans a revival featuring anointed preaching and singing.

The revival will be offered at 7:30 p.m. today and 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

FUMC observes women’s Sunday

Sunday is United Methodist Women’s Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. The Rev. Nancy Gammill, Five Rivers district superintendent, will be guest preacher and soloist Carolyn Welch will provide special music.

Youths in the United Methodist Kansas East Conference can attend to a program called “Read Until Something Happens.”

From Friday through April 28, those in attendance will read the Bible, nonstop, in hopes of feeling the presence and influence of God and his word. For more information, call Kent Ely at 841-7500.

West Side youths plan fund-raiser

The youth group at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive, will serve a potato bar after the Sunday service. Diners should bring their own table setting.

Proceeds from the meal will help two members, Julie McGinn and Tim Burgess, attend a summer work project in Mobile, Ala., that will benefit needy people in that area.

Couple to speak on church mission

John and Gay Connor have returned from their two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The retired couple served at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.

They will speak about their service during sacrament meeting for the Lawrence 1st Ward at 9 a.m. Sunday at 3655 W. 10th St.

Breakfast planned at Corpus Christi

The Knights of Columbus will serve breakfast after the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. April 28 Masses at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

Stewardship forms are due to the office May 1, when commitments for 2002 begin.

Musician featured at Clinton Parkway

The 10 a.m. Sunday service at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway, will feature special music by Joslin Topliff. The Rev. Rick Burwick will speak on “No end to increase, why am I not experiencing God’s endless increase?”

The message for the 6:30 p.m. Sunday service is “The alchemy of God.”

Youths of Indian Hills Church of God are sponsoring a garage sale today at the church, 601 W. 29th Terrace, to raise funds for an upcoming convention.

Unitarian program features Shakespeare

The Sunday program at Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship, 1263 N. 1100 Road, will feature “Shakespeare’s last years revisited” by Carol Enos. The program is offered from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

St. John’s plans discussion on ‘crisis’

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., will offer a panel discussion, “Crisis in the Catholic Church making sense of the senseless,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday and 9:45 a.m. April 28 in the parish hall.

Panel participants are psychology intern Joel Foster, therapist Susan Kraus, psychiatrist Susan Yoshida and the Rev. Charles Polifka.

Calvary Temple offers special service

Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th Terrace, plans a special communion service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday that is open to all believers. The church will observe Missions Sunday by honoring missionaries.

Trinity Lutheran offers classes

“Who are the Lutherans?” is the opening segment in a series of adult classes on Lutheranism that begin at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

The series of classes, which continue at 9:45 a.m. Sundays through May 12, will offer information about the Lutheran faith.

An orientation to first communion will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday in the social room. The class is open to children in first grade and above. A parent should accompany their child. Those planning to attend should call the church at 843-4150. Lunch will be served before the class.

Perry Methodist plans fiesta meal

Perry Perry United Methodist Church, 220 Oak St., will serve a fiesta dinner after the 11 a.m. Sunday service. Tacos, enchiladas, chips and cheese dip will be served.

The Rev. Samuel Castro of Puente de Fe in Topeka will be guest speaker. A free-will offering will benefit Puente de Fe.

Festival features Lawrence organists

Topeka The Topeka Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presents “Celebrating the Seasons: a Hymn Festival” at 5 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 901 Fillmore.

Lawrence organists who are participating include John Salveson of Trinity Lutheran Church and Dina P. Evans of Bales Organ Recital Hall at Kansas University.
