National League Roundup: Cubs’ Clement fans 12 again

? Matt Clement gained a win to go with his 12 strikeouts Friday.

Clement struck out 12 for the second game in a row and Roosevelt Brown hit a two-run homer as the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds, 5-2.

“Obviously, you’ve got to be feeling pretty good after two games like that,” said Clement, who also struck out 12 in a 3-2 loss to the Pirates on Saturday.

It was Clement’s first win with the Cubs, who acquired him from the Florida Marlins at the end of spring training. Clement (1-2) allowed just four hits over seven shutout innings, walking only one. He also drove in a run with a single, his first hit of the year.

“I’m thankful to be a Chicago Cub and get a chance to pitch for a great team like this,” he said.

Sean Casey, starting his first game since getting hit in the head with a pitch last weekend, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Reds, who outhit Chicago 7-5. Joey Hamilton (1-1) allowed five runs four earned five hits and five walks in six innings.

Houston Livan Hernandez won his fourth straight start despite another home run by Lance Berkman, and San Francisco beat Houston. Berkman hit his ninth home run of the season, moving ahead of Giants slugger Barry Bonds for the major league lead. Bonds singled twice and drew three walks.

Pirates 7, Phillies 4

Pittsburgh Armando Rios’ two-run single in a four-run eighth inning lifted Pittsburgh past Philadelphia.

Rockies 8, Diamondbacks 6

Phoenix Todd Helton tripled twice and drove in four runs as Colorado snapped a seven-game losing streak against Arizona, . Helton’s bases-loaded triple put the Rockies ahead 7-3 in the seventh inning. He then scored his third run on Todd Hollandsworth’s squeeze bunt.

Dodgers 5, Padres 2

Los Angeles Hideo Nomo pitched 713 strong innings and Shawn Green doubled twice as Los Angeles beat San Diego. Nomo, who lost to Brian Lawrence and the Padres 1-0 last Sunday, held San Diego to two runs and five hits. Nomo (2-2) struck out five and walked one.

Expos 5, Mets 3

Montreal Lee Stevens hit a three-homer, Tony Armas Jr. pitched six strong innings and Montreal took advantage of more bad defense by the Mets. The crowd of 8,281 Montreal’s first over 5,000 since drawing 34,351 on opening day included a large contingent of Mets fans who made the trip north from New York.

Braves 3, Marlins 2

Atlanta Darren Holmes won for the first time in three years and Chipper Jones hit a go-ahead grounder as Atlanta Braves overcame two Cliff Floyd homers to beat Florida.

Brewers 6, Cardinals 1

Milwaukee Ruben Quevedo snapped a career-long four-game losing streak and Milwaukee won its second straight game under interim manager Jerry Royster. Quevedo scattered seven hits over 713 innings as Milwaukee posted consecutive victories for the first time this season.
