Agnes Rita Hoffman

Gardner Services for Agnes Rita Hoffman, 82, Gardner, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gardner. Burial will be at St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery, Gardner.

Mrs. Hoffman died Friday, April 19, 2002, at Eudora Nursing Center.

She was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Gardner, the daughter of James and Anna (McCavick) O’Connor. She graduated from Gardner High School in 1937. She lived in DeSoto before she returned to Gardner 13 years ago.

Mrs. Hoffman was a cook for the food service department in the DeSoto school district for 15 years. She retired in 1975. She then moved and worked at Johnson County Multi-Purpose Center, Gardner. She retired from that job in June 2001.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the altar society at the church. She was a former member of Holy Family Church, Eudora. She enjoyed dancing with her companion, Gabriel Daniels, at Lawrence Senior Center and playing cards with friends in DeSoto and Gardner.

She married Leonard C. “Barney” Hoffman on May 8, 1942, in Gardner. He died May 1979.

Survivors include five sons, Gary L. Hoffman, Pittsburg, Larry G. Hoffman, Sacramento, Calif., John A. Hoffman, Gardner, James C. Hoffman, Linwood, and L. Brent Hoffman, Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Rose Wise, Overland Park; three brothers, Donald O’Connor, Manhattan, William O’Connor, Shawnee, and Jack O’Connor, Gardner; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, where a rosary will be at 3 p.m. Sunday.
