Police plan checkpoint

Lawrence Police will be watching for impaired drivers in North Lawrence late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

A checkpoint will be in operation from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 3:30 a.m. Saturday in the 700 block of North Second Street. Cars will be stopped in the northbound lane.

In addition to checking for impaired drivers, officers also will be looking for other violations, Sgt. Kirk Fultz said. About a dozen officers will operate the checkpoint.

Suspect charged in threats; wife wants him home

A 37-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Tuesday night for allegedly threatening his wife with a gun.

But during his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon, Jarrett E. Pearson’s wife asked a Douglas County judge to allow her husband to come home. She said her husband had never before threatened or harmed her.

Pearson, 1807 W. Fourth St., was charged with aggravated assault and domestic battery.

Police were called to Pearson’s residence about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to quell a disturbance. They arrested Pearson and confiscated a pistol he allegedly had, police reports said.

During court Wednesday, Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel set Pearson’s bond at $3,000. His next court date is 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Pearson was later released from jail. Because of his wife’s request, Kittel said he would be allowed to return.

Child found wandering alone

A 4-year-old was found wandering alone in the 3000 block of Iowa Street on Tuesday night by Lawrence Police. Wednesday, the boy’s mother was charged with endangering a child.

The boy’s mother, Tiffany M. Knight, 27, 2401 W. 25th St., was located by police about 10:40 p.m. at a place where she worked, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. Police received calls about the boy about 7:30 p.m.

The woman was questioned, then taken to the Douglas County Jail.

Police were not sure how the boy got out of the house. He was taken to the Douglas County Juvenile Intake Assessment Center and later turned over to a foster home, Pattrick said.

Knight sobbed throughout her first court hearing Wednesday before Douglas County Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel.

Knight was allowed to be released from jail on her own recognizance, but Kittel ordered her not to have unsupervised visits with her son.

Knight’s next court appearance was set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

19-year-old charged in domestic dipute

A Lawrence man faces several charges for allegedly breaking into an apartment and terrorizing his wife during a domestic dispute.

Wednesday Eric A. Reed Jr., 19, who is listed at the same address as his wife in the 2300 block of West 26th Street, was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, making a criminal threat and domestic battery.

Reed is being detained in the Douglas County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Police were called to the couple’s apartment about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. The man’s wife called as Reed was breaking through a window, police said. The woman told police the two had argued earlier in the day.

Police confiscated a pistol Reed allegedly had in his possession at the time of his arrest.
