Gruber, Wonder qualify for NCAA

? In its final competition before the Kansas Relays, Kansas University’s track team competed in the John McDonnell Invitational on Saturday. The Jayhawks had 24 top-three placers and more importantly provisionally qualified two more athletes for the NCAA Championships.

Senior Charlie Gruber ran the 1,500 meter run in a time of 3:44.65, a provisional mark. KU’s women also got a provisional performance out of senior Jennie Wonder in the 100 meter hurdles, with a time of 13.59.

Shameika McField took first place in the 400 meter dash. Several Kansas athletes earned second-place finishes, including Katy Eisenmenger in the 1,500 meter run, Andrea Bulat in the javelin, Shanetta March in the 200 meter dash and Brandi Taylor in the triple jump.

The men scored a first-place finish with Scott Russell in the hammer throw. Russell also finished second in the discus behind Kansas throws coach Doug Reynolds.

Benaud Shirley took second place in both the long jump and triple jump.

Kansas Returns to action Wednesday at the Kansas Relays.

“We’re looking forward to the Kansas Relays and the chance to compete in front of the home crowd,” coach Stanley Redwine said. “It’s our only chance to compete at home, and hopefully the community will come out and support us.”
