win

? Livan Hernandez loves to watch Barry Bonds at the plate just like everyone else  except maybe the opposition.

“Everybody’s waiting, every time he’s up” Hernandez said. “Is he going to hit a home run?”

Hernandez doesn’t mind the extra run support Bonds provides, either.

Bonds hit his 574th home run, moving past Harmon Killebrew into sixth place on the career list, and the San Francisco Giants sent the Milwaukee Brewers to their seventh straight loss, 3-2, Saturday.

Hernandez (3-0), who hadn’t won consecutive games in April before this season, went seven innings and gave up two runs and nine hits.

“Is that so many?” Hernandez defended himself when asked about the hits. “I care about the win. Win the game. I don’t care if it’s 29 hits.”

Bonds’ home run, his major league-leading seventh of the season, came in the first inning off Nelson Figueroa (0-1).

Ramon Martinez added a two-run homer for the Giants, who are off to an NL-best 9-2 start this season.

Robb Nen pitched the ninth for his third save.

Figueroa came out of the bullpen to make his first start of the season, taking over because starter Jamey Wright is on the disabled list with rotator cuff tendinitis.

After Bonds lofted his homer to right field, Martinez made it 3-0 in the third inning with his second homer of the season. The shot to the bleachers in left field scored Pedro Feliz, who singled.

The Brewers narrowed it to 3-1 in the fourth. Richie Sexson singled and then scored on Geoff Jenkins’ double.

Hernandez got into trouble in the seventh. Raul Casanova doubled, went to third on Jose Hernandez’s single and scored an out later on Alex Sanchez’s single. Jose Hernandez finished 3-for-3 with three singles.

Claimed off waivers by the Brewers on April 3, Figueroa has faced Bonds just five times in his career, giving up two homers to slugger.

Figueroa allowed the three runs and four hits over six innings on Saturday.

Bonds finished 1-for-2, with a home run and a walk. He was hit by Takahito Nomura’s pitch in the eighth inning.

Diamondbacks 7, Rockies 5, 10 innings

Denver  Pinch-hitter Chris Donnels delivered his first hit of the season, a two-out, two-run triple in the 10th inning and Arizona beat Colorado.

The Diamondbacks won for the first time this season when World Series co-MVPs Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson did not start. Arizona is 6-0 when its aces pitch, and is now 1-5 when they do not.

Mike Myers (1-1) worked the ninth and 10th to earn the win.

Expos 9, Mets 8,

11 innings

New York  Vladimir Guerrero homered in the 11th inning and Montreal , after blowing a seven-run lead built on shortstop Rey Ordonez’s three errors, beat New York. Ordonez, a three-time Gold Glove winner, had the worst fielding day of his career. The Mets made five errors.

Former Expo Scott Strickland (0-1) gave up Guerrero’s leadoff homer, which made a winner of Matt Herges (2-0), who pitched three scoreless innings.

Cardinals 2, Astros 1

St. Louis  Eli Marrero singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and St. Louis won its fifth straight game.

The Astros lost their fourth game in a row. They wasted a strong effort by Roy Oswalt, who struck out 10 in six innings.

Pirates 3, Cubs 2

Pittsburgh  Pittsburgh rookie Josh Fogg (2-0) shut down the Cubs for the second time in a week, and backup catcher Keith Osik homered.

Reds 5, Phillies 2

Philadelphia  Adam Dunn hit his first home run of the season, and Joey Hamilton (1-0) made his third consecutive strong start as Cincinnati beat Philadelphia.

Cincinnati first baseman Sean Casey was briefly hospitalized after being hit in the side of the head by a pitch from Robert Person in the first inning. Tests were normal, and Casey was released. He is day-to-day.

Marlins 5, Braves 4,

14 innings

Miami  Preston Wilson’s broken-bat infield single with two outs and the bases loaded drove in the winning run in the 14th inning for Florida.

Wilson hit a slow roller to third baseman Vinny Castilla, who tried to bare-hand the ball but failed to come up with it as Mike Redmond scored from third. Wilson had been 0-for-6 with three strikeouts.

Padres 6, Dodgers 4

San Diego  Deivi Cruz hit a two-run double in the eighth to lift San Diego over the Dodgers, who lost pitcher Kevin Brown to an elbow injury.

Dodgers spokesman Dave Tuttle said the club is not sure of the exact nature of the injury, but said it was either a strained muscle or scar tissue release.

Brown, 37, underwent surgery to repair a torn flexor muscle in his right elbow on Sept. 27. Brown, who was making the 401st start of his 15-year career, was on the disabled list three times last year.
