Atlanta prevails in two overtimes, 128-123

? Jason Terry didn’t plan to dominate the game. It just happened that way.

Terry had 43 points, including a tying three-pointer with less than a second left in regulation, and Atlanta rallied to beat Cleveland, 128-123, in double overtime Saturday night.

“I didn’t really take over,” Terry said. “I was just very aggressive. I played off my teammates and they gave me lanes to the basket and when I got there, I was able to finish.”

He played a career-high 54 minutes, including the entire second half and both extra periods. Shareef Abdur-Rahim finished with 36 points and sealed the victory with two free throws with 14.6 seconds left.

Abdur-Rahim played 53 minutes and Ira Newble 50, even though the Hawks were playing for the second straight night. They lost 112-73 in Toronto on Friday.

“We talk about giving them a rest, but you say well, they’re the ones that got us here, so let’s run with them,” Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. “I don’t think we could have pried Jason out of there late.”

Andre Miller had 27 and Wesley Person added 25 for Cleveland, which lost its second straight after a three-game winning streak. Person scored nine points in the third quarter but started the fourth on the bench.

He watched the Cavaliers take an 11-point and didn’t return until the final four minutes, then managed just one point the rest of regulation.

“I had a good third quarter and I felt like I was in a groove then,” Person said. “Then I sat down for … eight minutes, and I had a hard time getting back in it. My first two shots I took after that, I was really stiff.”

Abdur-Rahim gave the Hawks the lead for good at 122-119 with a three-point play early in the second OT. After the Cavaliers closed within one point in the final minute, Terry drove down the lane and threw a no-look pass to Ira Newble, who dunked it for a three-point lead. Cleveland turned the ball over on its next possession, and Abdur-Rahim closed out the scoring with two free throws.
