Agnes Ruskin Barnhill

Memorial services for Agnes Ruskin Barnhill, 89, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Barnhill died Friday, April 12, 2002, at her home.

She was born April 15, 1912, in White Lake, S.D., the daughter of the Rev. Edward Vance and Leona (Knapp) Ruskin. She attended grade school in Leavenworth and Osawatomie and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1929. In 1941, she received her bachelor of fine arts degree from Kansas University, where she was elected to Delta Phi Delta in 1939.

Mrs. Barnhill was assistant registrar at KU, where she worked in the Registrar’s Office from 1944 until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of the Lawrence Color Camera Club from 1954 until it disbanded in 1989. She served as the club’s secretary for many years, then vice president and president. She also belonged to the Photographic Society of America and the North Central Camera Club Council. She had illustrated several children’s books and was a member of Lawrence Unitarian Fellowship.

She married Ellis Barnhill on July 10, 1938, in Paola. He died Feb. 28, 1989.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ann Brien, Topeka; a son, Robert E. Barnhill, Lawrence; a brother, Robert E. Ruskin, Alexandria, Va.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A daughter, May Ruth Barnhill, died in 1953.

The family suggests memorials to Kansas University Endowment Association, sent in care of the mortuary.
