Teen possibilities

To the editor:

I have to reply to Niquita Davis, who asked, “What is there to do in Lawrence for someone under the age of 18?”

It’s sad that you believe drinking and getting in trouble are the only way you and friends know how to make yourselves have fun. See, I’ve been under 18, kiddo, and I never found a dearth of things to do.

Read a book. Write a letter, and I don’t mean e-mailing a couple of friends; write a real letter on paper to an aunt or an uncle or a grandparent, put a stamp on it, and walk it to the post office.

Work a jigsaw puzzle. You don’t need a special recreation center to do that. Dig out a board game or play a game of cards with family.

Still bored? Go out and pull some weeds. You might be surprised how long it takes. Sweep off the porch. Take a walk. My sister and I loved walking downtown, to a park or up on the campus.

Draw a picture. Learn to sew. Make something. Write a story. Take up dancing. There are a lot of varieties out there, and it doesn’t have to break your bank. For $6, you can whirl the night away at a barn dance, and I guarantee you won’t be bored.

You want the city to do something for you. What are you willing to do? Open up your eyes and see it’s a big world out there, full of overwhelming possibilities.
