LHS soccer scares Rural

? Topeka Washburn Rural, ranked among the top five teams in the state, scored on a penalty kick six minutes into overtime, and the Junior Blues escaped with a 2-1 girls soccer victory over Lawrence High on Friday.

“They’re one of the best teams in the state,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said. “We take so much confidence from this. Not only did we play with them, we felt we were better than them. We had more shots on goal. We possessed the ball more. We were the better team.

“I couldn’t have been prouder of them. It was so obvious we played with a great amount of heart and passion. It was a great game to watch. I wish we could have come away with a win.”

Trailing 1-0, the Lions (2-4-1) forced OT when Bliss Lemmon put in a penalty kick with 41¼2 minutes left in regulation.

Nelson cited Linsey Garito, Betsey Rowden and Dyana Lawrence for their defense and the forward play of Aly Barland.

The Lions will play host to Shawnee Mission Northwest on Monday.
