Jayhawks to entertain Texas Tech

Kansas University’s softball team hopes to climb closer to the .500 mark in Big 12 Conference standings when it plays host to struggling Texas Tech today and Sunday.

The Jayhawks, 3-6 in the league, will tangle with the Red Raiders, 1-9, at 2 p.m. today and at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Jayhawk Field.

Also on tap today is an alumni game at 9:30 a.m. and an introduction of KU’s 1992 College World Series team on hand for a 10-year reunion.

KU coach Tracy Bunge faces the prospect of meeting Texas Tech without half of her four pitchers.

Sophomore Kara Pierce, who leads the staff with 11 victories, hurled only two innings in last Wednesday’s doubleheader against Wichita State because of wrist tendinitis and may have to sit out the weekend.

“I would have to say she’s questionable,” Bunge said.

Also questionable is senior right-hander Kelly Campbell, who woke up Friday morning with a stiff neck and spent most of the day in the hospital. Campbell is the staff earned run average leader at 1.58.

If Pierce and Campbell can’t hurl, Bunge will still have freshman Serena Settlemier (8-6, 1.82 ERA) and junior Kirsten Milhoan (4-3, 1.95) available.

Senior left fielder Christi Musser continues to lead the Jayhawks in most offensive categories. Musser is hitting a robust .366 with six home runs and 24 runs batted in. Also hitting above .300 are Settlemier (.327), senior third baseman Megan Urquhart (.303) and senior center fielder Shelly Musser (.301).

Overall, though, the Jayhawks have been in a batting funk during the last couple of weeks and Bunge is hoping for a new resolve in the Texas Tech series.
