Jayhawk Invitational: Dakotan Koenig a Boschee fan

A native of Fargo, N.D., Tyler Koenig knows everything there is to know about Kansas University senior and North Dakota legend Jeff Boschee.

“Jeff Boschee is a god there (in North Dakota),” says Koenig, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound Fargo North High School junior basketball forward and football wide receiver.

“I hope to (meet him this weekend). He’s the pride and joy of North Dakota,” Koenig added before his Dakota Schoolers’ 67-49 first-round Jayhawk Invitational basketball loss to the Keith Wooden-led KC Nets on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

Valley City, N.D., native Boschee, of course, is the all-time three-point shooter in Big 12 Conference history.

“It is a great story especially for a kid coming from a small town in North Dakota where you don’t get a lot of attention,” Koenig said of the Boschee saga. “It was a great thing for everybody else in North Dakota. He helps kids like me who are trying to do the same thing.”

Koenig watched Boschee score 23 points in KU’s 108-77 victory over the University of North Dakota last Dec. 23 in Grand Forks, N.D.

“Somebody said there were two or three towns in the whole state that didn’t have at least one person at that game,” Koenig said.

Koenig  who averaged 16 points and 11 boards for undefeated state champion Fargo North this past season  is being recruited by Kansas, Iowa State, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas A&M and Nebraska in basketball. He’s being recruited by Notre Dame, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Minnesota in football.

He will play just one sport in college.

“I’m leaning toward basketball,” said Koenig, who exhibits a soft left-handed touch from the outside and is a banger inside.

He is admittedly a bit rusty after “not picking up a basketball for two weeks,” since his high school won the state title. “This is one of my top places, no doubt about it,” he said of KU.

Koenig will be able to tour KU’s basketball facilities on Sunday once the tourney is over.

“I’ll look around a little bit, but I think I’m going to come back too,” he said of an official visit. “This is a basketball player’s dream to play in a place like this. Now I get a chance to do it this weekend.”

The Schoolers will play at 12:30 p.m. today at Allen Fieldhouse and 4:15 p.m. at Horejsi Center. Wooden, a 6-9 Free State junior who is considering KU and others, will also play games today at 12:30 p.m. at Allen and 4:15 p.m. at Horejsi. Two courts are used in each building.

Arizona the pick: Andre Iguodala, a 6-6 forward from Springfield, Ill., has told recruiting analysts he today will pick Arizona over Kansas. He originally signed with Arkansas over KU in November, but was released from his letter-of-intent when UA coach Nolan Richardson was fired.

Â

No official word, yet: As of Friday, KU junior Drew Gooden had yet to schedule a press conference to announce his future plans. KU coach Roy Williams will be holding his annual season-ending press conference on Monday afternoon, a media session that conceivably could turn into a Gooden/Williams presser. On Monday, the 6-10 junior said he’d hold a press conference this week. It’s been long believed Gooden will opt for the NBA.

Â

Humphries update: Kris Humphries, a 6-8, 220-pound junior from Hopkins High in Minnetonka, Minn., will visit KU next weekend and Duke the weekend of April 26. Humphries has made unofficial visits to Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Arizona, Texas and Michigan State and is also considering Florida and Louisville. On campus this weekend are Devin Smith, 6-6 freshman from Coffeyville CC and Jeremy Case, 6-2 from McAlister, Okla.

What a season: KU led the country in four statistical categories in 2001-02, more than any other team in NCAA Div. I. It was also the most by a single team since UNLV led in five categories in 1990-91.

KU (33-4) led the U.S. in winning percentage (89.2), points per game (90.9), field goal percentage (50.6) and assists (20.7). KU was third in scoring margin (16.2), rebound margin (8.7) and three-point percentage (41.8). Gooden ranked fourth in rebounding (11.4), Jeff Boschee fourth in three-point field goal percentage (46.4), Nick Collison 10th in field goal percentage (63.8) and Aaron Miles 11th in assists (6.8).
