Martinez to have surgery

Arlington, Texas  Seattle designated hitter Edgar Martinez has a ruptured left hamstring and was scheduled to have surgery today. The six-time All-Star injured the hamstring while running out a grounder Thursday against Anaheim. Seattle’s trainer Rick Griffin refused to speculate how long Martinez would be out. The Mariners purchased the contract of first baseman Ron Wright from Triple-A Tacoma.

Cubs’ Alou on way back

Port St. Lucie, Fla. Â Chicago Cubs outfielder Moises Alou began what he hopes to be a short rehabilitation stint with the Class A Daytona Cubs by getting three hits Friday night in the Cubs loss to St. Lucie. Chicago plans to play Alou in two games in Florida, rejoin the parent team Sunday and activate him Monday in Montreal.

Detroit hires Felipe Alou

Minneapolis  Former Montreal manager Felipe Alou has accepted an offer to become Detroit’s bench coach for the remainder of the season. Alou, 66, joined the Tigers Friday.

Torborg suspension eyed

Miami Jeff Torborg was permitted to manage Florida’s game Friday against Atlanta pending a review of his two-game suspension by the commissioner’s office.
