Humane Society sponsors ‘Dog Gone’ fund-raiser

A fund-raiser for the Lawrence Humane Society, billed as a “Dog Gone Garage Sale,” will be Sunday outside the Douglas County Bank, 300 W. Ninth St.

Numerous items such as VCRs, books and clothes donated from 40 different Lawrence families will be sold at the event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., said Jonathan Gordon, one of three Kansas University students and Humane Society volunteers who organized the event.

In addition, 21 businesses have donated prizes such as restaurant gift certificates to be raffled off. A bake sale and a Girl Scouts arts and crafts show also will take place.

The goal of the garage sale is to raise $1,000, Gordon said.

Organizing the event with Gordon, a Munster, Ind., senior, are Lauren Passen, Deerfield, Ill, senior, and Carly Stein, Lawrence sophomore.

KU play ‘Desdemona’ has encore presentation

A bawdy play being staged at Kansas University has been extended because of sold-out performances.

“Desdemona, A Play About a Handkerchief,” by Paula Vogel, will be presented at 2:30 p.m. today in the Inge Theatre in Murphy Hall.

Tickets are available through the Murphy Hall box office, 864-3982.

Free State plans cookout to benefit soccer teams

The Free State High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams will be cooking out Sunday to raise money.

From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, two hot dogs or one bratwurst, a side dish and a drink will be available for $5 in the Lawrence Free State High School commons area.

Tickets may be purchased from any soccer team member or at the event.

Additionally, raffle tickets will be available at the cookout to win FSHS sweatshirts and other gear, KU sports memorabilia and dinners from local merchants. The ticketholder does not need to be present to win.

All proceeds and donations will benefit the soccer teams.

Penney’s employee arrested on suspicion of cash theft

An employee at the J.C. Penney store, 3311 Iowa, was arrested by Lawrence Police on Thursday for allegedly stealing money from the store.

Sharon L. Haubbin, 42, 617 Stonegate Court, was charged Friday in Douglas County District Court with one count of theft by deception.

The charge alleges that Haubbin took an amount between $500 and $25,000 from the store during a period from Dec. 1, 2001, to Thursday.

According to a police report, officers were called to the store about 4:30 p.m. by a loss and prevention specialist employed by the store. Haubbin was identified as a suspect after an internal investigation by the store, the report said. Store losses were listed at more than $1,180.

Police took Haubbin to the Douglas County Jail. During Haubbin’s first appearance Thursday in court, Judge Paula Martin allowed her to be released on her own recognizance. Haubbin is to appear in court again at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
