Signs needed

A few more informational signs could answer a lot of questions for motorists using the new parking structure in the 900 block of New Hampshire.

The opening of the Lawrence Arts Center in the 900 block of New Hampshire is bound to attract many more vehicles to the city’s new parking structure across the street.

It would be a great service, both for Lawrence residents and visitors from out of town, to provide additional signs to clarify parking procedures in the new garage.

A sign at the entrance to the garage points to “2-hour free parking” to the right, but it’s unclear whether the free parking begins immediately or the sign is simply pointing the way to the lower level. There is a charge for parking in some parts of the garage; motorists want to make sure they are parking in the free area so they won’t receive a ticket. Some additional signs on the wall, for instance, would eliminate any question of where the two-hour free parking was located.

People who regularly park in the garage probably have mastered the system of paying at kiosks in the corner of the garage, but additional signs might make the procedure more clear. It also would be helpful to have signs letting people know during what hours parking limits are enforced. Can people park anywhere, free, after 5:30 p.m.?

The new parking facility is convenient for visitors with various downtown destinations, but the addition of a few well-placed signs could make it even more user-friendly.
