KU junior in architecture updating miniature campus display in Kansas Union

Daniel Bradbury has the whole campus in his hands.

Bradbury, a junior architecture major, is renovating and updating the miniature model of the Kansas University campus displayed on the fourth floor of the Kansas Union.

He plans to spend almost 400 hours working on the project before it’s complete in August.

“It’s something I can bring somebody to see and show them what I’ve done,” he said.

Bradbury started on the project in October. He’s taken photos of campus buildings and pored over design drawings.

The model was built in 1962 and has been updated several times as new buildings were added.

The last update was in 1995.

This time around, Bradbury is adding the press box at Memorial Stadium, the parking garage north of the Kansas Union and new expansions to Murphy Hall and Joseph R. Pearson Hall.

He’s also updating the roofs at Stouffer Place Apartments and the location of fraternities and sororities.

Bradbury also will have to add several changes before they’re complete in real life, including the Kansas Union renovations, the new engineering building and the Student Recreation and Fitness Center.

So far, he’s spent 100 hours on the project. Each building takes 10 to 15 hours to complete.

The Memorial Unions are paying Bradbury $12 an hour for his work. He has built models since his freshman year of college, but they’re usually larger than miniature campus buildings, some of which are about an inch tall.

“It’s actually easier to do a smaller model because you don’t have to have the detail,” he said.

Bradbury constructs the buildings from balsa wood and styrene and uses model paint.

Bradbury said the replica isn’t done in perfect scale.

“It’s not there for accuracy. It’s there for general purposes, like if someone’s taking a campus tour.”

Bradbury said the project will help on his resume. He’s just glad to update the model and not have to build one from scratch.

“I’m amazed somebody actually built all of this once,” he said. “I’m assuming it’s not a student because they wouldn’t be able to find the time.”
