Job applicants line up for chamber position

More than 100 people have applied to become the new vice president of economic development for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. The deadline to apply is Monday.

“Our hope is to get a person in place by Aug. 1,” said Shirley Martin-Smith, a member of the Lawrence-Douglas County Economic Development Board.

Representatives from the city and county governments  which help pay for the position  are on the 20-person search committee. A representative from the Lawrence school district, which would benefit from increased taxes raised by new companies, is also on the committee.

Martin-Smith said the committee will find the right person, even if that person isn’t among current applicants.
