Council approves package

? High school players picked in professional basketball drafts would keep their college eligibility as long as they do not sign with teams or hire agents, the NCAA Management Council recommended on Tuesday. A similar proposal covering players already in college was defeated. At the close of a two-day meeting in Denver, the council approved that proposal and other measures involving initial and continuing academic eligibility, acceptance of educational expenses and definitions of amateurism. The panel defeated other proposals that would have allowed college prospects to sign pro contracts, compete with professionals or receive compensation for athletic competition.
