State hikes turkey units from three to four

? Kansas spring turkey season will open on Wednesday with several new rules in place. For starters, the state is divided into four turkey management units instead of three.

Unit 1, in northwest Kansas, has unlimited turkey permits (one per hunter).

Unit 2, the eastern half of the state, has unlimited permits, and hunters may also obtain a second tur-key game tag for this unit.

Unit 3, southcentral Kansas, also has unlimited permits and second turkey game tags.

Unit 4, in western Kansas, had only 175 permits allocated. (Applications were due Feb. 15.)

Unlike previous years, all permits this year are unit-specific. Primary permits are valid only in the units for which they are purchased. Second turkey game tags, however, are valid in both units 2 and 3.

Primary turkey permits cost $20.50 for residents, and $30.50 for nonresidents.
