KU summer theater slates auditions

Auditions are set for the Kansas Summer Theatre’s production of “Prairie Fire, Parts I and II,” a pair of new plays by Kansas University theater and film professor John Gronbeck-Tedesco.

Auditions are Saturday and April 14 in Murphy Hall at KU.

The two plays  “Lift Off” and “Denouement”  are the first parts of a group of plays based on reminiscences and oral histories about the early period of Kansas history. The plays deal with the “amnesia” that comes from forgotten history and the price people pay for this amnesia.

Sign-up for auditions is from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in the Murphy Hall lobby. Community members unable to sign up in person may call the University Theatre office, 864-3381, between noon and 4 p.m. Friday. Open call auditions are by appointment from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in room 209 in Murphy Hall.

Auditioners should prepare memorized audition material, using contrasting pieces from dramatic literature. The total audition time should not exceed two minutes. Instrumental musicians should prepare one minute of music; the production needs both string and wind instruments. A piano will be provided.

Callback auditions are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 14, also in room 209. Vocal auditions will be held during callbacks.

Rehearsals begin June 4 and will be from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. The plays, directed by Marianne Kubik, KU assistant professor of theater and film, will be performed July 12-14 and 19-21 in Crafton-Preyer Theatre in Murphy Hall.
