? Kansas University senior Scott Russell placed second in the javelin at the Texas Relays on Saturday with an NCAA automatic qualifying throw of 239-1.

John Stiegeler of Oregon won with a heave of 242-11

KU senior Katy Eisenmenger placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run in a personal-best 4:25.15. Her time is fourth best on the all-time KU list. Sophomore Laura Lavoie placed 10th in 4:31.98.

Freshman Brooklyn Hann placed ninth in the triple jump in 41-314. The jump was third best in KU history.

High jumper T.J. Hackler tied for fourth in the high jump in 6-934.

Several KU athletes also competed Saturday at the Emporia State Relays.

Sarah Schraeder took first place in the high jump, while Abbey Ferris and Abby Nielsen placed second and fourth respectively in the 100 and 400 hurdles.

Also at Texas, the UT women, who won the NCAA outdoor championships in 1999, took a pair of relays and the 1,500 meters. Texas also won the men’s pole vault.

The Texas women also won the distance medley relay Friday night and were chosen as the meet’s outstanding team. The LSU women came in as the meet favorites with the 2002 NCAA indoor championship title and a No. 2 ranking on the outdoor circuit.

Texas’ Erin Sims won the women’s 1,500 meters in 4 minutes, 23.82 seconds, nearly a full second faster than SMU’s Karin VanRooyen.

LSU won the triple jump behind Nicole Toney’s leap of 43 feet, 71*4 inches.

On the men’s side, Mississippi State posted a pair of big wins in the 400- and 800-meter relays.

The Bulldogs’ time of 39.13 seconds in the 400-relay was good enough to automatically qualify for the NCAA championships. They won the 800-relay with a time of 1:23.35.
