Kansas downs Missouri, 107-97

Vinson scores five points, dishes six assists in victory

? It was pretty much the kind of game Lawrence High’s Stephen Vinson thought it would be.

While the sloppy, highlight-reel-filled basketball that dominated Saturday’s HyVee High School All-Star Basketball Classic didn’t really suit Vinson’s workman-like style, it did impress the Lions’ standout.

“It’s fun to be out here with all these athletes and be a part of it,” said Vinson, who averaged 15.9 points a game last season in leading Lawrence to its first Class 6A state tournament appearance in seven years.

“I didn’t really get a chance to find my shot, but being the point guard that’s not really what I am supposed to do.”

Although Vinson scored just five points, he left his mark on defense and was so efficient leading his squad’s offense that Kansas coach Rick O’Neil, from Spring Hill, wanted Vinson controlling the show when the game was close in the final minutes.

Vinson did, finishing with a game-high six assists, helping lead Kansas to a 107-97 come-from-behind victory at Johnson County Community College.

“I think he did a great job,” said LHS coach Chris Davis, who watched from the stands. “There’s really no way to expect what’s going to happen in an all-star game environment. So while it got a little sloppy, he did a good job of running things. I was impressed.”

While Vinson, who won the boys/girls three-point shootout with Kansas City Schlagle’s Marchelle Campbell prior to the game, provided several exciting assists, by no means could he steal the spotlight from Van Horn (Mo.) High’s Michael Lang.

Lang, a 6-foot-2 forward that shares a little resemblance to Kansas University’s Keith Langford, also loves to jump like the high-flying Jayhawk. He provided several oohs and ahhs during pre-game warm-ups, but nothing could prepare the crowd for the dunk contest.

Lang started from the right key as if he might try to cock the ball before throwing it down, but in mid-flight with his head near the rim quickly flicked the ball between his legs before cramming it home.

“Wow, that was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” said Vinson, still in disbelief nearly 30 minutes after it happened. “I think people paid to see that rather than the game.”

When calm finally was restored, the game took a back seat as everyone waited for yet another spectacular slam from Lang which never came.

“I was glad I could be a part of it, especially with the people I care about being up there in the stands cheering me on,” Vinson said. “It’s quite the way to go out.”
