John Henry Lederer Sr.

? He was born Sept. 28, 1919, near the Baldwin Junction, the son of Earl N. and Edith (Newland) Lederer. He attended Independence Grade School, near Baldwin Junction.

After finishing school, he continued to work on the family farm. When he was 13 years old, he went to do farm work for Charlie Pitts for several years. He continued farm work throughout his life. He also worked two years for North Oil Company, running a service station on West 23rd Street, Lawrence. He later opened a station at 1030 N. Main, Ottawa. He also did electrical work, construction and welding for Ottawa Steel Company and delivered milk. He delivered mail for 10 years on the Pomona Rural Route No. 1.

Mr. Lederer was a member of Richter United Methodist Church and West Franklin County district school board. He was also a former Junior Judgers 4-H leader.

Mr. Lederer lived with his wife in Lawrence before moving to Ottawa in 1940.

He married Nellie Nadine Johnson on July 18, 1939, at the Franklin County Courthouse. She died April 25, 1998.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Kay Johnson, Council Grove, and Helen June Ramshaw, Wakarusa; two sons, John H. “Jack,” rural Pomona, and Jim, of the home; three sisters, Thelma Randel, Baldwin, Doris Blevins, Eudora, and June Pine, Lawrence; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Monday at Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, Ottawa, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
