Capitol Hall falls, 9-8

? Free State High claimed its second 9-8 victory in the Claremore baseball festival Saturday when it defeated Oklahoma City Capitol Hill.

The Firebirds edged Fayetteville, Ark., by an identical score Friday.

Against Capitol Hill, the Firebirds breezed to a 9-0 lead with four runs in the first inning and five in the second.

“We were great offensively the first two innings,” Free State coach Mike Hill said. “We hit the ball well and ran the bases effectively, and then just kind of stopped. Then we held on for dear life.”

Kyle Unruh drove in three runs, Matt Berner and Cassidy Thompson each went 2-for-3, and Thompson stole two bases.

Capitol Hill scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Unruh, who came on in relief of Matt Lane in the fourth inning, was the winning pitcher. Freshman Jake Hoover entered with two outs and the sixth and earned the save. Hoover pitched a hitless seventh inning, allowing just one walk.

“We put a freshman in a pressure situation and the young man responded,” Hill said.

The Firebirds improved to 4-2 and returned home with a 2-0 record in the tournament.

“We had a great weekend,” Hill said. “We got better at some things, and we know there are some things we need to work on. All in all, it was a successful trip for us.”
