Roush drivers revived
Kenseth leads team's turnaround
Philadelphia ? A year ago, Roush Racing batted 0-for-9 at the top of the Winston Cup points standings.
Jeff Burton’s 10th-place finish was the best of Roush’s four drivers. Mark Martin was 12th, Matt Kenseth 13th and rookie Kurt Busch 27th. Sweeping disappointment for one of Winston Cup’s top teams.
Now, heading into the season’s seventh race Sunday at Texas, all four Roush drivers are in the top nine. Talk about a quick turnaround. Kenseth is leading the way, in second place. Busch is fifth, Martin eighth and Burton ninth. Kenseth and Busch have each won a race.
“From a driver standpoint, I’m not doing anything different,” Kenseth said. “It’s all about equipment. When you’re in good cars with good engines and you can get them to handle and you have the pit stops that you need to have, you can put yourself in position to win races.”
Kenseth, 30, likes seeing his name as runner-up to Sterling Marlin in the points standings.
“It’s a great feeling, but it’s such a long year that I don’t get too caught up in it,” he said. “If it was October, I’d be more excited about it. It’s early; so many teams haven’t shown their potential yet.”
Those teams include Robert Yates Racing and Hendrick Motorsports. The Yates drivers are Ricky Rudd (14th) and Dale Jarrett (24th). Rookie Jimmie Johnson (fourth) is the top Hendrick driver.
