Jayhawks turn back Creighton twice

Don’t look back, baseball icon Satchel Paige often warned, because somebody may be gaining on you.

Not that Christi Musser is worried about twin sister Shelly overtaking her for the Kansas University softball team leadership in home runs.

“I hope she keeps it up,” Christi said after she and sis helped the Jayhawks post a doubleheader sweep over Creighton on Thursday afternoon at Jayhawk Field. “She doesn’t need any tips from me.”

Christi and Shelly stroked three hits apiece to fuel KU’s 6-1 triumph in the opener. Kansas captured the nightcap, 2-0, as freshman Serena Settlemier hurled a one-hitter.

Shelly, a three-time All-Big 12 selection who made her reputation as a slap-hitter and base-stealer, slammed two doubles and a home run against the Blue Jays.

The home run left her three behind her sister for the team lead, but it was her second circuit blow of the season, and her second in less than a week. She hit No. 1 last Saturday against Texas.

That’s man-bites-dog-type news because in her first three years with the Jayhawks, Shelly hit a grand total of one home run. Putting it another way, Shelly’s blast over the right field fence was only her third in 201 games as a collegian.

Naturally, Shelly took some good-natured joshing from her teammates about trying to muscle up like her sister Christi.

“Yeah, a couple of people said that,” Shelly said, smiling, “but I never even thought about it. I’m swinging the same, just up a little more.”

For three years, Christi has played second fiddle to her twin sister, yet it is she who has wielded the Jayhawks’ hottest bat this season. Her three singles Thursday lifted her team-leading batting average to .390. She also hiked her team RBI lead to 21 by driving in two runs Thursday.

“We’ll let her have her one year of glory,” sister Shelly quipped.

Meanwhile, Shelly, off to a slow start while recovering from a fall shoulder operation, collected four hits in the twinbill and boosted her average from .288 to .305.

More important, the two wins, coupled with a 9-2 romp over Washburn on Wednesday, helped salve the wounds of three heart-breaking 2-1 losses to Big 12 Conference foes last weekend.

“We need some Big 12 wins and we needed to get some confidence back, and this is just what the doctor ordered,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said.

In the second game, Settlemier surrendered a one-out double to Creighton’s Jenny Hunt in the first inning, then retired the next 20 Blue Jays in a row. Settlemier struck out seven and walked none. Settlemier’s record climbed to 6-5 while her ERA dipped from 2.35 to 2.12.

In the first game, Kara Pierce and Kirsten Milhoan combined on a three-hitter.

“Our pitching staff struggled early,” Bunge said, “but their earned run averages have come down considerably lately.”

Kansas, 22-15, will hit the road to College Station today for single games Saturday and Sunday against Texas A&M. Creighton slipped to 11-21.
