Rick’s Place still draws Hawk fans for final tourney game

A Night on the Town

Despite the loss by the Kansas University Jayhawks men’s basketball team on Saturday night, people showed up at Rick’s Place, 623 Vt., to watch the championship game Monday night.

But some were still wishing that KU was playing, and some were disappointed that KU couldn’t beat the Maryland Terrapins Saturday night in Atlanta, Ga., in the Final Four.

“I am very disappointed, because I am a huge fan,” KU senior Jennifer Lange said.

The Jayhawks ended up being defeated by nine points, after being down by 20 midway through the second half. The Indiana Hoosiers pulled off another upset victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in an earlier game Saturday and were just waiting to see who they would play, which turned out to be the Terrapins. The Sooners were the second No. 1 seed to be knocked off by Indiana, and Maryland was looking to avoid being the third.

Although it was a pretty quiet night inside, the majority of the eight to 10 people in Rick’s Place were rooting for the Hoosiers. The main reason wasn’t because Maryland beat KU, but because Indiana was the underdog, despite upsetting two No. 1 seeds as a No. 5 seed.

“I am rooting for the Hoosiers,” Melissa Yates, 25, Prairie Village, said. “I hope they win. I like to root for the underdog.”

Lange also was cheering for the Hoosiers that night.

“I hope Indiana wins, because they are the underdog,” she said.

One man was impressed by the way Indiana was playing in the first half, but had a different opinion on the outcome of the game.

“I think Indiana is doing well,” Joe Brown, 31, Lawrence, said. “I think Maryland is going to win.”

Maryland ended up pulling off the victory over Indiana 64-52, and won their first men’s basketball national championship. That helped make KU look better, because they lost to the eventual champion, but many people said they would have been doing something different had KU been playing.

“I would have come out earlier (to) get a good place,” Yates said. “Some of my teachers said they wouldn’t have class the next day or would give out take-home tests.”

A man from Tulsa, Okla., was hoping to have a party if KU could have defeated Maryland.

“I would have been at my apartment,” Brendan Rineer, 23, said. “I planned to have people over.”

Despite not playing in the championship game Monday night, some fans were still happy about the way the Jayhawks’ season ended.

“I am not disappointed, but happy with their season,” Yates said.
