City to seek federal aid for ice-storm expenses

The city is asking the federal government for $132,000 reimbursement for costs associated with the January ice storm.

Douglas County was part of the northeast Kansas federal disaster area declared after the Jan. 30 storm, which knocked down tree limbs and power lines and left thousands of Lawrence residents without power some for several days.

City Manager Mike Wildgen told the Lawrence City Commission Tuesday that staff from the city’s Public Works, Finance, Parks and Recreation, Utilities and emergency departments all contributed to the city’s response and recovery from the storm.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will accept applications for reimbursement aid from the storm through this week, he said.
