SM East slips past Lawrence High girls

? Shawnee Mission East, a state finalist the past three years and ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, scored in the first half and hung on for a 1-0 girls soccer victory over Lawrence High on Monday at Shawnee Mission District Soccer Complex.

“The shot bounced off a couple of our players, they got a lucky bounce and the girl finished it,” LHS coach Keith Nelson said of SM East’s lone goal.

SM East (1-1) had seven shots on goal. LHS (1-0-1) had five.

Nelson cited the play senior defender/midfielder Betsy Rowden, center/midfielder Aly Barland and center/midfielder Bess Chatman.

Lawrence’s home opener is against Leavenworth at 7 p.m. Thursday at Youth Sports Inc. fields.
