KU Basketball Notebook: Gooden edges MU’s Rush

? Notes compiled from the Final Four.

Kansas University’s Drew Gooden dipped under the 20 points-per-game mark, but did finish as the leading scorer in the Big 12 this season.

Gooden, KU’s junior forward from Richmond, Calif., averaged 19.83 points, eclipsing Missouri’s Kareem Rush, who finished at 19.77 points per contest.

Boschee ball: KU coach Roy Williams is right when he says basketball players are resilient and able to bounce back from major disappointments. Take Jeff Boschee, who, though mighty dejected about the Jayhawks’ Final Four semifinal loss to Maryland on Saturday, has been able to look ahead to what promises to be a bright future.

“It’s hard to realize it’s the last time I’ll put on a Kansas jersey. That’s tough to take, but life goes on,” said Boschee, who plans to attend the upcoming NBA draft camp in Portsmouth, Va., in hopes of being a second-round pick in the 2002 NBA Draft or landing an invitation to play for an NBA summer league team. “There are other things in life besides basketball.”

Boschee would like to play basketball for a living, but if he can’t land a lucrative contract somewhere, he will try to realize his dream of being a coach.

No omen: Here’s one potential omen that didn’t work out. The last time KU won a national championship, in 1988, the Jayhawks had a new athletic director (Bob Frederick) and named a new football coach (Glen Mason) late that year.

This year, KU has a new athletic director in Al Bohl and new football coach in Mark Mangino.
