Professional society honors scientists

Five scientists from the Kansas Geological Survey were recently recognized by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

The survey, based at Kansas University, was the only organization with multiple awardees at the association’s annual meeting March 11 in Houston.

Honored were:

Lee Allison, survey director, who received the society’s public service award for such projects as speaking out in the Kansas evolution controversy in 1999 and his involvement in the Hutchinson natural gas explosions in 2001.

Lawrence Skelton, head of the survey’s Wichita Well Sample Library, who received a public service award for his work in explaining geology to the public.

Geologists Martin Dubois, Alan Byrnes and W. Lynn Watney, who were honored for best technical poster at the association’s meeting last year. The poster described a project in which carbon dioxide from a new ethanol plant will help produce additional oil from a well near Russell.
