KU-Nebraska pregame

February 6, 2010

This chat has already taken place. Read the transcript below.

Jesse Newell:

KU 74-52.

melrank:

Whenever the annoying KY_FAN poster shows up on our board posting stupid stuff, I always wonder how many of our fans troll on an opposing team's board?

Me - never.

melrank:

KU 86 - 68

Jesse Newell:

melrank — I was on K-State's message boards some last week, and the answer is higher than you might think.

melrank:

Jesse - you catching the Texas/OU score?

52-34 OU with 18:24 left in 2nd.

melrank:

But did you post?

Jesse Newell:

That score is crazy. KenPom says OU is the worst team in the Big 12. I'm shocked at that one.

And no, I didn't post. For college sports, I only post on our message boards, and you know it's me because my name is attached to it.

hawkandtigerfan:

best nintendo game ever - DOUBLE DRIBBLE

kuwells:

Hey, Jesse...

KU 88
N 56

Texass 36
OKLA 53

Jesse Newell:

Double Dribble is classic. I love how the net flips completely upside-down when you make a basket.

Jesse Newell:

I love Tecmo Super Bowl the most, though. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out was awesome as well.

friedy:

What is the key, do you think, to teams getting better as the season progresses under some coaches (Kansas) and not under others (Texas)? I am talking about a several season sample, not just this year...

Jesse Newell:

friedy — Good question. Self talks about "peaking" at the right time a lot. The way he does it is that, early in the season, he keeps a lot of things very basic for his team. Players aren't allowed to switch on screens — they have to fight through them. Self believes that way they learn the right way to play defense. As the season goes on, Self adds more wrinkles to his offense and defense. That way, he believes his team is playing its best and most complete basketball at the end of the season.

lmjhawks:

87-70 KU wins.

Jaybird87:

Is the game going to broadcast anywhere online? Yes, No, Maybe so?

kuwells:

Don't you post anonymously under user name spankypants? Or are you jayhawkinmullen?

melrank:

As a journalist, I would expect you'd be on alot of boards. So, my question could have been more specific on whether anyone posts on opponent's boards.

I didn't expect you were posting under the pen name of Jaybate :)

OU 55-38 at 15:49

Texas looks really poor - lots of turnovers, poor offense, guard play is sorry.

I've been a big believer in Texas this year, but I'm starting to wonder if they are an elite level team or not.

Jaybird87:

The game going to be broadcast online anywhere?

Jesse Newell:

For the online seekers: It should be on ESPN360.com, or you can always try http://justin.tv/sremlahc10, password: phog.

Jesse Newell:

kuwells — I am Jaybate ........

Just kidding.

Jesse Newell:

melrank — Texas has been fading the last few weeks. The 'Horns still have a ton of talent and are pretty good defensively, though. I wouldn't want to play them in March.

Byrd313:

Baseball Stars was huge because it was the first Nintendo game to keep stats.

kuwells:

Sorry, I predate the Nintendo generation, but of the ones my kids play, I like Mario Kart or Super Mario Brothers. Somewhat addictive...

Jesse Newell:

Super Mario Kart was awesome on the Super Nintendo. I've heard this elsewhere, but it's true for me as well: Whenever I see a banana peel in the street, my first instinct is to swerve to miss it.

And the baseball game I played on Nintendo was Baseball Simulator 1.000. You could play your games in space. And also make your players super fast.

Jesse Newell:

Chase Buford has a new mustache. For his sake, I hope he doesn't get in the game today.

BruceWayne:

do you agree the Octagon of Doom should be the Hawktagon of Gloom?

Jesse Newell:

I'm with SI's Seth Davis. If Kansas State is going to go with Octagon of Gloom, it needs to go all out.

Jaybird87:

Tecmo Super Bowl and Double Dribble. Have to love em!!!

Jesse Newell:

The Chiefs' Robb Thomas is the slowest receiver in the world on that game, but he catches every single pass that is thrown his way. And Christian Okoye is money, too.

melrank:

KU - me too on the prehistoric dating of video games, but my 9 year old daughter has the Wii Fit video game and it's pretty cool.

It's a long ways from the little Coleco hand held football game of my youth that you go up, down, forward and backward .

kuwells:

Hawktagon of Gloom implies that it is a bad place for a Hawk. It is a bad place for a mildcat. Hawktagon of Domination!

Jesse Newell:

I had this game and played it approximately 3 hours a day ...

denverjhawkfan:

KU 80
NU 68

X goes off for 18 today!

kuwells:

9 year old - Wii Fit! Dang, you are a hard core dad! I hear you can get a great workout on those. True???

melrank:

Jesse, OU is playing a little tentatively with the big lead and it's starting to show.

OU 59-50 at 11:18

okjhok:

Definitely Tecmo Super Bowl. Touchdown special with the Eagles...Cunningham at QB with the run/pass option...unstoppable, even against the blitz. I was absolutely addicted to that game.

Jesse Newell:

okjhok — Was he Cunningham, or was he "QB Eagles"?

Jesse Newell:

melrank — Georgetown did the same thing today against Villanova before playing better down the stretch.

milehighhawk:

Contra is a close second, but I've got to give it to Mike Tyson's punchout.

Honorable Mention: Double Dragon

melrank:

Jesse - cool website and I stand corrected. My football game was made by Mattel. Here's the picture and I wore out two of these as a kid. Very funny.

Jesse Newell:

melrank — I played that baseball game you showed, too. I was really young then.

BigDaddyJayhawk:

Jesse, I'm in Gainesville Texas watching OU beat Texas. Driving to Austin to get my party on in anticipation of mondays game. You will be my only connection to todays game. So, please do me right today.

Jesse Newell:

BigDaddy — I'll do my best. You're following on the mobile site I'm guessing?

Jesse Newell:

Fieldhouse is filled to the top already. Why does it feel like KU hasn't played here in a month?

whitey45:

Jesse- I really liked your defensive efficiency based upon pace of game numbers you put up today. Do you think that is a bit of an ominous sign as come tourney time the games tend to be a bit more grind it out than they are during the regular season?

Jesse Newell:

whitey — Thanks. When I saw the trend, I thought it was interesting more than anything. It went against what I had thought, so I decided to share it in a blog. I wouldn't worry, especially with so much season left before we get to March.

denverjhawkfan:

Jesse-

I was going to try to meet you at Boulder Wednesday night, but we got stuck in traffic and ended up missing the first 10 minutes of the game. I don't go to any other games than the KU/CU game here every year (FB and BB both), and I wanted to ask you if the CU student section was indicative of most other student sections in other venues? I didn't mind the constant booing and BS chants, but when they took the lead and started chanting "F-you KU" at the end of regulation I was appalled. Your thoughts?

Jesse Newell:

denver — Sorry you got caught up in traffic. I was able to meet KUWells while I was there, so we could have had our own little pre-game gathering.

I would say, for a non-KSU/MU crowd, CU's fans were more vulgar than normal. I think most of the anger from them came because there were so many KU fans in their own building (and there are every year). That has to get old when 35 percent of the people there are cheering for the other team.

As far as noise goes, I thought CU's fans did a pretty good job. It was extremely loud at the end of the game.

okjhok:

Yes, QB Eagles, of course

BigDaddyJayhawk:

That's right. I'm with two of my buddies that are both Texas boys. We had to stop to watch this fiasco of a game. This is our fifth KU-UT game in Austin. Guys only weekend in Austin. We need to look better than Texas does today.

pizzashuttle:

Is Sadler the coach to turn Neb. BB around or is he on his way out?

Jesse Newell:

okjhok — Love it. Just like Jim Kelly was the mysterious "QB Eagles".

Jesse Newell:

pizza — I like Sadler, but I think his time is running out. I was at his post-game press conference after the KU game, and you could tell he was frustrated. He kept acknowledging that his team should be able to compete with teams like KU. I think he's a good coach, but he never seems to have the athletes.

melrank:

OU hanging tough 68-60 at 5:54.

denverjhawkfan:

I agree with the "invasion" in their house part. That would be frustrating. It seemed like it was more like 50-50 with the fans to me. Our fans were really quiet I thought, that is until we took a good lead in OT. Then we got pretty loud ourselves. All in all, though, it's not my favorite venue, but I know I'm biased! Nothing beats Allen Fieldhouse!!!

okjhok:

People think an unstoppable running back was key in that game; but no, it was a running QB, and QB Eagles was the best. Although, I will say, the Okoye/Word combo could be pretty effective, especially with DT on the other side of the ball.

Jesse Newell:

ok — D.T. was so fast. Amazing.

kuwells:

Thanks Jesse. See you Monday!

Jesse Newell:

All right, guys. I'm going to close it up. Thanks for the chat. See the live blog for analysis, photos, polls and more.
