Stanley Redwine, head coach for the KU Cross Country team, will answer questions on Monday, August 28 at 1:30 p.m. (CST). Coach Redwine is entering his seventh year as head coach and with five of the top male performers from last season, the team is looking to the Big 12 and NCAA Championships.

Coach Redwine:

There are no KANSAS CROSS COUNTRY shirts that can be bought at the Kansas Union bookstore. How can we proudly display our support of the Kansas Cross Country team if we can’t purchase a shirt? Can you please have the Kansas Union stock some classy Jayhawk Cross Country shirts? Please not like those generic, one color Jayhawk, Track & Field shirts. Thanks.

Coach Redwine, Do you think the positive tests of Gatlin and Jones cast a shadow over the Relays?

Shelby

KU has a cross country team?

How big of deal is hosting the Big 12 Championship? Could Rim Rock ever host the national meet?

Stanley Redwine

Thank you, I am exctied to chat with you today.

Stanley Redwine

It’s a big deal for the cross country team and the community to host the Big 12 Championships because we haven’t ever had a Big 12 championship, for any sport, at KU. It is an opportunity for the community to see the team in action. The course is ready for an NCAA championship. We did host the meet in 1998.

I have two questions. How do the men compare to Colorado, do we have a chance to win the Big 12 Championship?

Also, can you comment on any of our freshmen men and women? How are they looking in early season workouts?

Thanks.

Stanley Redwine

Colorado has alwawys been a strong team. We are closing the gap year to year. We both have experienced teams and it will be interesting to see what happens at the Big 12 Championship. The freshmen are looking good on both sides. Because it’s early, we don’t know exactly how things will go, but they are working well as a group and working hard together.

Are you concerned that the recent positive tests by Justin Gatlin and Marion Jones for performance-enhancing substances could hurt fan interest in the KU Relays this spring?

Stanley Redwine

I would hope it doesn’t affect fan attendance. We didn’t know they allegedly used banned substances the at the time of the Relays. Our goal is to put on a great meet every year.

Coach Redwine,

Hi, this is Jerreme Jackson. As a coach, what do you do to help motivate your athletes to continue pushing themselves during trainig, especially during times when they may feel like their times aren’t improving?

Stanley Redwine

It’s an individual thing. Different things motivate different athletes. We challenge our athletes both physically and mentally. We give them confidence so they will achieve.

What do you expect from the women’s track team now that big names such as Charisse Bacchus are gone? Do you expect any certain person or event group to step up?

Stanley Redwine

Every year someone steps up. Two years ago we lost Brooklyn Hann and that’s when Charisse stepped up. Every year, the seniors have a chance to step up. My hope is that every event area will take this as an opportunity to help the team.

I know you have to head off to practice, but we have one more question.

cwrist

How much will your cross country and track teams miss Tim Weaver and the contributions he made during his time at Kansas?

Stanley Redwine

We will definetly miss him. He’s been at KU 10 years and has been one of the cornerstones of the program. The Relays has excelled under his leadership. He will be greatly missed.
