Rash of car vandalism, thefts hits west Lawrence

Lawrence police are investigating reports of 13 auto burglaries or vehicle thefts that have happened this week in the same vicinity west of Wakarusa Drive. The rash of thefts and broken windows in cars has victims and neighbors frustrated.”I’d like to see them caught. They’ve obviously been tearing up the neighborhood around here,” said Mike Clancy, a contractor whose family had its 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe stolen early Tuesday morning from their home in the 1100 block of Stonecreek Drive.Shawnee County Sheriff’s officers found Clancy’s vehicle Tuesday afternoon on a rural road southeast of Topeka. It has been returned to them while Lawrence police have checked it for fingerprints.The Clancy family had to cancel credit cards and other items that were stolen inside a purse that was in the vehicle. Transactions have been made in the Topeka area. Mike Clancy said the vehicle was unlocked and that the burglars found a spare key inside. They drove it away sometime after 12:30 a.m. while the family slept inside the home, he said.About one block away in the 5200 block of Harvard Road, around the same time, someone found a spare key and drove away a 2000 Saab that was in an open garage. Kathy Occhipinto said she and her family were home asleep during that time. Officers have not yet found the vehicle, but several credit card and other transactions have been attempted in Topeka, she said.”I think some of us are banding together to set up a neighborhood watch,” Occhipinto said.Lawrence police released a report this morning of the two calls and the following other auto burglary reports in the area:¢ Between 5 a.m. and 5:25 a.m. Tuesday, 1400 block of Marilee Drive, items taken include a wallet and iPod, with an estimated loss of $425. The vehicle was locked with no sign of a forced entry.¢ Between 1:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, 5200 block of Harvard Road, a 2007 Ford Escape and 1993 Ford F-150 were burglarized when someone broke a window. Damages were estimated to be $1,600 and property taken was expected to be valued at $45.¢ Sometime after Tuesday morning, 1800 Sweetwater Court, a wallet was taken from a vehicle parked inside the garage while people slept inside the residence.¢ Reported Tuesday morning, sometime overnight, someone took a laptop computer from an unlocked vehicle in the 5000 block of Congressional Way and a vehicle was also burglarized in the 1300 block of Morgan Court.This morning police said they have fielded additional reports of auto burglary calls from residences in:¢ The 700 and 800 blocks of Fox Chase Court.¢ The 1600 block of Bob White Drive.¢ The 1200 block of Waverly Drive.¢ The 5000 block of Jeffries Court.Officers had not yet released details on those calls.
