Bracket Buster edition
We’ve been collecting news and notes from across the country relating to Kansas in the NCAA tournament. Here’s a smattering of items, leaving the best piece of news for last, so read all the way to the bottom. Or skip ahead, whatever is your pleasure.Starting with politics:Barack Obama has KU losing to North Carolina in the Final Four. No word on how that will affect his support in the Sunflower State. This can’t be confirmed, but North Carolina doesn’t vote until May, so perhaps Obama is looking to one-up candidate Hillary Clinton.Speaking of Hillary, Bloomberg reports that she has deferred to hubby Bill Clinton to make picks. Clinton, in turn, has taken a pass at sharing a bracket publicly. That leaves us with John McCain (annoying registration required to see his Web site), who also has KU in the Final Four, and also losing to North Carolina. No word on if this is payback for Kansas lending its support to Mike Huckabee. In other news:Elizabeth Dole picked Duke to win it all. Elizabeth Dole, of course, is the wife of Bob Dole, the favorite son of Russell, Kan. While seeings the Dookies lose to West Virginia probably hurt, she also predicted Davidson would beat Kansas. In a note to the Raleigh News & Observer she said, “Sorry Bob!”Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, ever mindful of how her color choices might affect her standing in the state, brought two jackets to Omaha: one purple, one blue. For K-State’s loss to Wisconsin, she sat in Wildcat land wearing their colors. She’d switched to blue in a Jayhawk section in time for KU’s thumping of UNLV.Saved the best for last, a pair of math majors at the College of Charleston have developed some insanely complex algorithm to predict who would win the tournament. After inputting data from more than 5,000 regular season and conference tournament games, the students determined Kansas was the most likely winner. Their Final Four is KU, UNC, Duke and Texas. Three for four isn’t bad, and it snugs up fairly nicely with my my own bracket, which is in a tie for third place on sister site KUSports.com._I’m still nosing around for more links of note.
