One bet made, another in the offing
Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is betting some Kansas City steaks that the Jayhawks will bring home a men’s basketball national championship tonight. In a statement released by her office today, Sebelius said she and Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen had agreed to put Memphis ribs and Kansas steaks on the line as the Jayhawks and Memphis Tigers play tonight.”The Jayhawks are especially good at defeating tigers, even those from Memphis. Coach Self and his team have made us incredibly proud this season and I look forward to cheering on the Jayhawks as they win tonight,” said Sebelius, who has been in San Antonio watching the games.Bredesen is just as confident.”We certainly have bragging rights with two Tennessee teams vying for national championships this week,” Bredesen said. “A side of Jayhawk will be especially tasty with a nice Kansas steak, after the Memphis Tigers give us our first championship victory of the week.”Bredesen’s comments allude to the University of Tennessee’s match-up with Stanford in the women’s national championships.Lawrence leaders get in the act Newly-elected Lawrence Mayor Mike Dever had a teleconference scheduled for this afternoon with Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton.Dever said, though he’s new to the job, he’s hoping to convince the Memphis city commission that there should be public humiliation for the city that is home to the losing team.”It was awfully fun watching the folks in Virginia put on our hats after the Orange Bowl,” Dever said. “For me, it’s an opportunity to solidify the relationship between the city and the university.”Dever noted, however, that because Memphis is a bigger city and may not be as into their team as the Lawrence City Commission is.
