Police hand out 84 MIPs, several other citations on Saturday
The Lawrence Police Department announced Tuesday that it had issued more than 140 citations in connection with Saturday's football game between Kansas University and Florida International.
But you don't have to tell that to students and fans who were at the game. The police seemed to be everywhere and handing out citations for actions that may have been ignored in weeks past.
In addition to the 84 MIPs, police handed out 33 tickets for consuming in public. Consuming in public typically involves drinking on a sidewalk, alley or public street. The police also handed out seven tickets for hosting minors. Those tickets stem from a new law that allows the police to give the party host a ticket if anyone at the party receives an MIP.
The fine for those violations is a minimum of $1,000. More on alcohol-related violations is available here.
Police also handed out citations for unlawful use of a driver's license, operating an open saloon, urinating in public, interference with the duties of a police officer and obstructing official duties.
Police are asking for help from the public to deter underage drinking and other violations in the future.

All of a sudden it is enforcement time! Maybe these tickets should have only been warnings. Give game goers a break until they are aware of what the violations are.
This is a good way to reduce game participation!

Welcome students to Lawrence KS and home of the KU Jayhawks and the LPD. I guess this clearly sends a strong message to anybody that is not in compliance to what's legal and what's not. LPD …dont mess with us. I guess they stepped it up a bit and must have given ole Dennis Steffes a break over at Last Call.

Whooweee. I was out tailgaiting and it was like 2006 Wakarusa. Cops everywhere. A buddy got nabbed because he walked across the alley with a beer. We knew about sidewalks. It's nothing new that LPD patrols fairly heavily on gamedays, although last Saturday must of been some special sting operation. Operation End of the Month Quota Time. Had no clue about the alley. $88. Ouch. Could've easily been me. Oh well, law is the law.

This is absolutely rediculous. There is absolutely no reason the drinking age should be anything more than 18. The underage drinking laws in America are absolutely insane. As a college student who was born and raised in America, I believe the fact that people over the age of 18 cannot go to a bar and drink socially is a huge problem and is a major reason why American kids have the highest rate of binge drinking. It also has a huge effect on the lacking social skills of Americans, leaving them socially inept. The city fine of $1,000 for having anyone underage drinking on your property is absolutely insane. College kids party, it's a fact. Do you actually expect them to ID people in their house, even if they are of age? Insteado of trying to persecute those who are doing nothing wrong, wouldn't it be a lot better for the police to focus their resources on combatting drunk driving?

Minor in Posession…my roommate who is just months from being 21 was given an MIP last weekend on our own property! His costs will be over $500, for simply having a beer with his friends. Absolutely rediculous.

Um… I know plenty of people who got just as screwed up for the football game as they did for wakarusa.
i think your idea of a hippie, confrontation, died a long time ago, and only a small fraction of wakarusa fans fit this profile. The usual KU student wouldn't mind getting wasted in a field listening to music or on a street by the stadium… listening to music.
having been to wakarusa AND witness to the joy of a home football game just half a block from the stadium, i'd have to say the actions of the crowd and result of each activity are the same.
lots of loud music, trash, and drunk people peeing outside (in the football games case, on your front yard).

oh mah gah! i cannot believe I even read that in a post. Not letting 19 year olds drink is having a negative effect on the normal development of social skills?! Your immaturity is spilling out of nearly every statement in your post.
You use the word “rediculous” to refer to simple law enforcement. I was a college student when the drinking age was 18, and drinking on campus was allowed. THAT was rediculous. Students were completely out of control. I was there, I saw it, I lived it. Freshmen were dropping out after one semester, dropping like flies. You write of things you know little about.

Dad, I am assuming you were one of the 18 yr olds that did not get drafted to Viet Nam, but could still drink…otherwise you'd have a more intelligent statement for this young lady~Most of the 18 or 19 year olds I've encountered in this century have as much (probably more) social graces than your bunch did at that age.

Did anybody hear about the fuzz locking the doors at The Hawk (or whatever it's called now) and giving virtually everyone in there an MIP? Heard they literally chained the doors to keep people from leaving. Wondering if this is urban legend or if it actually happened? Anybody hear anything like this?

welcome to facism 07. i was on alabama and saw many of these tickets being given. I also photographed the 'plain clothes' police men and women who were out on the prowl. It was sick to see this waste of resources. What a joke. The numbers don't tell of the many who were harrassed and over 21 or not even drinking alcohol. Chief olin and his gestapo sure had fun smiling and ruining kids lives. Oh the best part was the officer who told me there was no oridinance for blocking private drives. He said as long as its not blocked there is no distance they have to be away from the drive. As his patrol car and a ABC car blocked our only exit.

I guess I don't see what the buzz is about. If you aren't old enough to drink, you probably shouldn't drink. And if you do, you shouldn't get mad when you get caught. And as someone mentioned earlier, if you're going to throw a college party, it is kinda your responsibility to make sure you don't have any minors there drinking, or you pay the price for that too. Its called being an adult. I think some college students forget thats what they are. I don't think getting an MIP is ruining someone's life. I think drinking all day at the KU game and then getting behind the wheel and killing yourself or someone else would be considered as ruining someone's live.

Who doesn't know it's illegal to have an open container in public? You are only allowed to drink in a bar or at home. Or a designated tailgating spot on campus. Get real. My mother-in-law lives near the stadium and someone either hit or forced a street sign out of its hole during one of the games this year. They're going to end up banning alcohol at the games again. I wondered how long the drunks would take to screw it up. It's amazing they even remember going to the game. Why bother. Are you there for football or to get drunk. It's easier and cheaper to get drunk in a bar or at home.

private property doesn't have to have a bar or a home on it for you to drink on it.
as for ruining lives it might be a little extreme but people are all affected in various ways by the things that happen to them in their life.
i guess i shouldn't be taken seriously for exposing goons who were in some cases trespassing onto porches and in back yards on their drunk hunts. or waiting for people to walk across alleys or onto a sidewalk to swarm in and put coins in lawrences coffer.

If we had a collective brain, and weren't being held as fiscal hostages of the Fed Govt, we would put 3.2 beer back in for 18-21. It was a good idea then, and would be now.
I'm older than the hills, but I can't see how we can treat an adult, over 18, as a “minor”.
