Regents direct university presidents to examine background checks

Thursday, 18 October 2007

In respose to stories in the Lawrence Journal-World and the Kansas City Star, Kansas Board of Regents CEO Reggie Robinson asked the Council of Presidents to examine whether faculty background checks are warranted at regents universities.

The newspaper stories followed a change in policy at the University of Missouri system, where all faculty joined staff in being required to undergo background checks.

"This is something I think COPS should consider," Robinson said.

Regent Gary Sherrer thanked the university presidents for agreeing to consider the matter at its November meeting and reminded them why it's something they should take seriously.

"I know it's complicated, but it would only take one serious incident to make it not as complicated as it seems," Sherrer said.

COPS, which includes the presidents and chancellor of the six regents universities, meets once a month on the days of the regents meetings.
