Haskell hoops teams set for conference tournaments

The Haskell Indian Nations University men’s and women’s basketball teams are both seeded in the middle of the pack heading into this weekend’s postseason tournaments.

The Haskell women’s team is seeded fourth in the Association of Independent Institutions conference tournament and will take on No. 5 seed Wilberforce University at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Lincoln, Ill.

Haskell, which finished the regular season with a 12-16 overall record (8-3 in conference play) won the first meeting between these two teams, 69-59 on Jan. 4 in Lawrence.

Friday’s winner advances to Saturday’s 1 p.m. semifinal game, where they will face the winner of Friday’s clash between No. 1 seed College of the Ozarks and No. 8 seed Lincoln Christian.

The sixth-seeded Haskell men will take on No. 3 seed Lincoln College at 4:45 p.m. Friday, also in Lincoln, Ill., with the winner advancing to Saturday’s 3 p.m. semifinal game. The championship and third-place games are set for Sunday.

Haskell and Lincoln are meeting for the second time, and Haskell will look to avenge a 58-50 loss during their first matchup on Jan. 20.

Head coach Matthew Downing Jr.’s men’s team finished the season on a hot streak, winning five in a row to close out the regular season, including three victories at home. Haskell enters postseason play with a 16-13 overall record and an 8-4 mark in conference play.

In addition to racking up the program’s best record since becoming a four-year institution in 1993, three Haskell players recorded 1,000 points for their careers during the 2019-20 regular season.

Nakia Hendricks and Tristan Keah-Tigh achieved the feat in the same game, and Bryon Elledge joined them in eclipsing the 1,000-point mark as well.

Video highlights and live stats for both tournaments can be found on the A.I.I. website throughout the weekend.
