Eudora High football advances in 4A playoffs; Perry-Lecompton falls

The Eudora Cardinals advanced in the Class 4A state football playoffs on Friday night, with a dominant, 50-7 victory at Atchison.

The Cardinals (6-4) picked up six of their seven touchdowns on the ground and five different players scored in the blowout win.

Senior quarterback Gage Hayden’s three rushing scores and two more from junior tailback Octavius Lyles made them the only Cardinals to hit pay dirt more than once in the easy victory.

Brayden Beerbower and Errol Siemon added rushing touchdowns for EHS and sophomore Adrion Seals scored on a 25-yard pass from Hayden.

The win moved the sixth-seeded Cardinals into the final eight in Class 4A. They’ll look to punch their ticket to the state semifinals next Friday, when they play host to No. 10 seed Bishop Miege (4-6). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Miege knocked off Tonganoxie, 34-20, in Round 1 and upset second-seeded Chanute, 33-21, in Round 2 on Friday night.

So far, the Cardinals have outscored their two postseason foes 98-19 during their 2021 postseason run.

Perry-Lecompton blanked

Perry-Lecompton ran into a buzz saw on Friday night, falling to Holton, 41-0, in Round 2 of the Class 3A state playoffs.

The loss ended the Kaws’ season with a 6-4 record. Holton, meanwhile, remained undefeated at 10-0 and moves on to face another 3A No. 1 seed, Girard, in the semifinals next Friday night.

PLHS trailed just 7-0 after one quarter, after keeping Holton off the scoreboard for nearly 10 minutes of game action. But Holton scored three second-quarter touchdowns, including one with 47 seconds to play in the first half, to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats outgained the Kaws 417-195 in total offense, with all of those yards coming on the ground. Holton ran the ball 57 times against the Perry defense and averaged 7.3 yards per carry.

PLHS quarterback Gunnar Ball finished 19-of-33 for 132 yards and an interception in the season finale. He also added 32 yards on the ground, joining Jesse Herman (eight carries for 31 yards) in leading the Kaws’ rushing attack.

Ty Williams (7-23) and Jackson Payne (6-60) led the PLHS receivers, with Kael Gorski also grabbing three receptions for 62 yards.
