The Kansas baseball team used a complete performance from its pitching staff and a relentless offense to push past Sacramento State for a 6-4 win Wednesday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

It finished off a split in the two-game midweek series after the Jayhawks suffered a 11-6 loss to the Hornets on Tuesday. Kansas is now 23-19 on the year, while Sacramento State moved to 25-13 overall.

Sacramento State started off the scoring once again, plating two runs in the second to take an early lead. The Jayhawks were quick to respond with a run off of an error in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half.

After a home run extended the opposition’s lead in the third, Kansas started to fight back. In the bottom of the fourth, Brett Vosik launched a two-run, game-tying home run to right. The home run was the first of the season for Vosik.

The Hornets went ahead again in the sixth, but the Jayhawks battled back when Jack Wagner walked and advanced all the way to third on a ground out and wild pitch. Tom Lichty stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter, delivering a go-ahead home run to center to put Kansas ahead for good. It was also Lichty’s first career blast.

Kansas added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, while a bullpen combination of Daniel Hegarty and Jonah Ulane shut down the Hornets for good. Tavian Josenberger extended his hitting streak to 21 games in the win.

Kansas hosts North Dakota State for a three-game series this weekend. The series opener is slated to begin at 6 p.m. Friday.
