Free State’s Andrew Park places 7th at 6A state golf meet

A pair of Free State boys golfers claimed top 15 finishes to close out the 2019 campaign.
The 6A state golf meet, which was originally scheduled for last week, was finally completed Tuesday afternoon at Firekeeper Golf Course. After being postponed more than a week due to rain and course conditions, junior Andrew Park and senior Landon Berquist led the Firebirds in the final action of the spring season.
Park finished in a tie for seventh with a 74, which was two shots over par. Sion Audrain of Garden City won the individual title with a -6, carding a 66 total score. Berquist closed out his FSHS career with a 76 (+4) to place 15th on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Ross Brungardt was Lawrence’s lone representative at the state golf meet, and he shot a 79 (+7) to finish in a tie for 24th. Senior Dylan Sommer (+11), junior Mitchell Spriggs (+15), junior William Gard (+17) and sophomore Nathan Pilakowski (+27) all finished outside the top 45.
As a team, Free State shot a 320 to place eighth overall out of 12 teams. Shawnee Mission East won the 6A team title with a 298 overall score. Blue Valley North finished as a runner-up with a 300, while Olathe East placed third with a 305.
