Letter to the editor: Proud to live here

To the editor:

I would like thank the Journal-World for giving front-page coverage for “Police share draft policy limiting cooperation with ICE.” It was made clear that the city leaders expressed support for the draft. The Lawrence Police Department would limit police cooperation with the federal immigration agents. The exception would be when there are criminal matters involved. The functional and legal basis for this decision was discussed.

The treatment of immigrants, and my thinking is reminiscent of how the Jewish people were treated in Nazi Germany before and during World War II. There were many brave Europeans for whom compassion for others was worth the risk of providing them sanctuary. The indiscriminate arrest and deportation of immigrants, some of whom have been guaranteed security, is happening now. In some cases the deportation will likely result in their being killed. While I am sure that there may be many exceptions to my analogy, there are so many similarities that I needed to express my opinion.

Making us aware of this issue is an example of why I am proud to live in Lawrence.

Jim Hasselle,

Lawrence
