A Lawrence man has been charged in Douglas County District Court with 15 counts of child sex crimes that, if he were convicted, could result in life in prison.

The man, Adrian Raye Wisdom, 26, is charged with two counts of rape, nine counts of sodomy, and four counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, all felonies, according to charging documents. Most of the charges are filed as off-grid felonies involving a child under 13 years of age that could result in a life sentence if Wisdom were convicted. The charges relate to multiple incidents between 2017 and 2023.

Wisdom was taken into custody on Wednesday. He appeared in court on Friday, where he asked the court for an attorney.

Assistant District Attorney Brian Deiter asked the court to set a $250,000 cash or surety bond for Wisdom. He said despite Wisdom having no criminal record, the charges Wisdom faces warrant the high bond.

Wisdom said that the bond was higher than he could afford because he was “on disability.”

Chief Judge James McCabria then set the bond at $250,000 and appointed Michael Clarke to represent Wisdom; he said Clarke could file a motion for a reduced bond. Wisdom is next scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 16 for a status conference.
