Native American scholar to give public lecture at KU; will focus on addressing colonialism in education

Improving education systems for Native Americans and other indigenous people will be the focus of a public lecture this week hosted by various KU groups participating in Native American Heritage Month.

Alex Red Corn, an assistant professor of educational leadership at Kansas State University, will speak at noon on Wednesday at The Commons on the University of Kansas’ Lawrence campus.

Red Corn will deliver a lecture titled “Liberating Sovereign Potential in Indigenous Education: Building Capacity and Confronting Colonial Entanglements.”

“Through ‘Liberating Sovereign Potential,’ I want to encourage educators to critically reflect on how educational systems are still working towards the original goals of settler-colonialism and assimilation,” Red Corn said.

Red Corn, a member of the Osage Nation, advocates that educational systems need to be “re-centered” around the cultural and political systems found in Native American communities.

People who want to attend the event in person are asked to register with KU at eryan@ku.edu. People also can find streaming information for the event at thecommons.ku.edu.
