Two new leaders named for KU’s student health center

The University of Kansas student health center that does everything from providing basic medical care to promoting COVID-19 vaccinations has a pair of new leaders, the university has announced.

Dr. Graig Nickel has been named the medical director of Watkins Health Services, and Ellen Herman has been appointed as the center’s administrative director, according to a release from KU.

Nickel has been a doctor at Watkins Health Services since 2012. He’s a board-certified family medicine physician. Before joining the KU center, he practiced medicine in Lindsborg for 10 years.

Herman joined Watkins in March. She previously was a director of clinic operations for the University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka and also previously was a director of the Internal Medicine Group, a Lawrence-based doctor’s office.

The change in leadership comes as Watkins Health begins operating under a new model. Earlier this year, the student health center began operating under a partnership in which the University of Kansas Health System and LMH Health assumed medical management and oversight of the clinical services at Watkins Health Services. Prior to the change, Watkins Health Services simply reported to KU’s Student Affairs department.
