Ric Averill is holding auditions at the Lawrence Arts Center Saturday for the original work “Threads, Weaving the Tapestry of Lawrence Freedom,” which will play out stories from prehistory to the here and now.

Another chilly weekend will bring several interesting happenings to Lawrence, including auditions, an online craft class, a fundraiser, a Story Circle for collecting tales of love, and two outdoor events that were originally scheduled for last weekend.

THURSDAY

• Are you 65 or older with a story about love? The Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., is hosting “Lawrence Love Letters Story Circle” today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Come to listen, share your story and connect with others. Stories will answer these questions: What does love look like? What does love sound like? What does love smell like? What does love taste like? The stories and ideas will be recorded for later use in a “Lawrence Love Letters” performance in February. See lawrenceartscenter.org for more information and COVID guidelines.

SATURDAY

• Last week’s cold and snowy weather caused a postponement of the First Day Hike, but it’s on again for 10 a.m. Saturday. Join other hikers for a 1.5- to 2-mile hike starting at the Clinton State Park office, 798 North 1415 Road. Wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes. Leashed pets are welcome. A box will be available for any nonperishable food donations.

Also thanks to the weather, last Saturday’s “Orienteering at Riverfront Park” was rescheduled for this Saturday, starting at noon. Come to the park at 1594 North Third St. and spend an hour or two out in the woods. Orienteer Kansas provides the markers and the detailed topographical map, while you choose your route. Instructions will be available for first-timers. For more information, contact mary.orienteerkansas@gmail.com or call 785-318-6279.

• Calling all actors, grade 4 through adulthood. Lawrence writer/actor/musician Ric Averill is holding auditions at the Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St., 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., for an original work. “Threads, Weaving the Tapestry of Lawrence Freedom” will play out stories from prehistory to the here and now, including Lawrence’s complicated relationship with abolition and the founding of our Free State. Please prepare a 30- to 60-second monologue or poem and be prepared to work with others at this ensemble-based audition. See lawrenceartscenter.org for more details.

• If you’re feeling like staying in, the Lawrence Public Library is hosting “Mindful Crafting: Darn(ing)!” from 11 a.m.-noon on Zoom. Participants will be learning the basics of darning, a method of repairing garments. Bring an item you’d like to darn, scissors, sewing needle, yarn or embroidery thread, and (optional) a darning egg or other object to put inside the object to be darned. Registration is required; for questions, please contact Ruby at rmackinnonlove@lplks.org.

SUNDAY

• The Lawrence Beer Company, 826 Pennsylvania St., is supporting a fundraising event, “She’s Still Smiling,” to assist a survivor of domestic violence with the costs of dental implants. The event will start at 7 p.m. and will include a trivia night for $10 per person; you may play on a team or as an individual. Tickets are nonrefundable and must be purchased in advance; see www.lawrencebeerco.com/fundraising-trivia for more details.
