Snow and ice may create hazardous conditions for Lawrence residents’ Friday morning commute.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a winter weather advisory for Douglas County and other eastern portions of the state from midnight until noon Friday.

The weather service warns that a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain will move across the area beginning late Thursday, with freezing rain and sleet expected through Friday morning. Rain will likely continue through the rest of the day.

Lawrence is expected to see a total of 1 to 2 inches of snow Friday, with ice accumulation of up to a quarter of an inch, the weather service said.

Friday’s temperatures are expected to start in the mid 20s and may reach into the upper 30s.

A rainy afternoon Friday should transition to a cloudy night and give way to sun on Saturday, with highs again in the upper 30s.
