The rise of Christian nationalism will be explored tonight at downtown church

University of Washington professor James K. Wellman Jr. will give a talk titled “Religion in the Age of Trump” at 7 p.m. today at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vermont St.

Wellman spoke at Trinity Episcopal Church earlier Monday on the “Megachurch Movement in American Culture.” This evening he plans to discuss the rise of Christian nationalism and how it has led to support of President Donald Trump.

Wellman is chairman of the Comparative Religion Program at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is in Lawrence as the 2019 Theologian in Residence. The visit is a collaboration between the University of Kansas’ Ecumenical Campus Ministries, the Department of Religious Studies and several Lawrence congregations.

Tuesday morning the public can hear Wellman speak at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., during classroom presentations at KU’s Department of Religious Studies, Smith Hall, 1300 Oread Ave.

Wellman is the author of several books, including “High on God: How the Megachurch conquered America.”
